On prom night, my mother locked my bedroom door.
That was when I knew something was wrong.
Downstairs, Noah was waiting for me in a navy suit with the bow tie he had been talking about for months. I could hear him laughing with my aunt through the floorboards.
Mom turned toward me.
“You can go with Noah tonight, Christina. But first, I need you to hear something.”
I stared at her.
“About what?”
Her eyes moved toward the closed door.
“About Noah.”
Then she added quietly:
“And about me.”
My heart started pounding.
Noah and I had been best friends since we were six.
We met in first grade because we both hated raisins.
Our teacher handed everyone little red boxes at snack time, and I was secretly hiding mine beneath a napkin when Noah leaned over.
“That’s smart.”
I looked beside me.
He was doing the same thing.
“You hate them too?”
“They’re old grapes,” he said seriously.
That was enough.
By lunchtime, we were inseparable.
Noah had Down syndrome, but at six years old, that mattered far less to me than the fact that he cheated at dinosaur trivia and laughed at my terrible drawings.
One afternoon, another boy in class told Noah that nobody would ever marry him.
I still remember Noah’s face falling.
“Somebody will love him,” I snapped.
The boy laughed.
“Then you marry him.”
Later, Noah found me alone.
“Chrissy… would you love me?”
At six, I had no idea what kind of question that really was.
“Maybe.”
His face brightened.
Then I remembered hearing my older cousin talk about prom.
“But first we have to go to prom.”
“What’s prom?”
“A dance you go to when you’re almost grown up.”
Noah held out his pinkie.
“Promise?”
I hooked mine around his.
“Promise.”
I forgot about it almost immediately.

Over the next twelve years, our friendship survived different classes, changing interests, awkward teenage years, and everything else growing up threw at us.
Noah loved baseball statistics.
I loved art.
He dragged me through endless conversations about pitchers.
I dragged him through museums.

When my parents divorced when I was twelve, everything changed.
Dad moved out.
Mom cried when she thought I wasn’t watching.
I stopped eating much at school and became quieter.

When I wanted to quit art after someone laughed at one of my paintings, Noah stole the ugliest dinosaur picture I had ever drawn and taped it inside his locker.
“Why would you put that there?”
“Because you can’t quit yet.”
“Why?”
He studied the drawing.
“Because your dinosaurs still look like potatoes with arms.”
That was Noah.
He never tried to fix everything.
He just stayed until things hurt less.
So when senior prom finally arrived, there was never really any question about who I wanted beside me.
But Noah still formally reminded me.
One afternoon, he appeared at my locker.
“Do you remember first grade?”
I pretended not to.
His face dropped.
Then he held out his pinkie.
And suddenly I remembered everything.
The raisins.
The dinosaurs.
The cruel classmate.

“Prom?” I asked.
“Prom.”
Then he smiled.
“I already bought the bow tie.”
“When?”
“November.”
“Noah, prom is months away.”
“Stores run out of things.”
“They were not going to run out of bow ties.”

On prom night, Noah arrived carrying a corsage.
I was halfway down the stairs when I saw Mom open the front door.
Her expression changed the second she looked at him.
Noah stood there smiling in his navy suit, his ridiculous bow tie perfectly straight.
In one hand was the corsage.
“What kind of flower is that?” I asked.
“Rosemary,” Noah said proudly.
“Why rosemary?”
“The florist said it means remembering.”
He grinned.
“And I remember promises.”
Behind me, Mom made a strange sound.
When I turned around, her eyes were wet.
“Mom?”
“Come upstairs.”
“What? Noah’s waiting.”
“I know.”
Once we entered my bedroom, she closed the door.
Then locked it.
“You’re scaring me.”
“You can go with Noah,” she said. “But I need one promise first.”
I immediately became angry.
“If this has anything to do with Noah having Down syndrome—”
“It doesn’t.”
“Then what?”
Mom sat on my bed.
“Do you remember when your father left?”
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with tonight?”
“You were twelve.”
Then she said something that caught me completely off guard.
“You stopped eating lunch.”
My arms fell to my sides.
“How do you know?”
“Noah told me.”
I stared at her.
She explained that during the worst part of the divorce, Noah once found her crying alone in her car in the school parking lot.
She thought nobody had seen her.
But Noah had.
“He asked me if you were broken,” Mom whispered.
My throat tightened.
“Why?”
“Because you weren’t eating. You weren’t laughing much. He noticed you sitting alone.”
“What did you tell him?”
“I told him you weren’t broken.”
Mom squeezed my hand.
“Then Noah said something I’ve remembered for six years.”
“What?”
Tears slipped down her face.
“He said, ‘Good. Because I don’t know how to fix people. I only know how to stay.’”
I couldn’t speak.
Suddenly, all those quiet lunches came rushing back.
Noah sitting beside me.
No questions.
No pressure.
Just presence.
Then Mom revealed the secret she had carried for six years.
“I asked Noah to promise me he would look after you.”
I stared at her.
“You asked him that?”
“I was falling apart. Your father was gone. You barely spoke to me. Noah was the only person who could still make you smile.”
According to Mom, Noah hadn’t hesitated.
He had simply said:
“Okay.”
Then Mom looked ashamed.
“But after that, I started making a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“For years, whenever you defended Noah or changed your plans because someone excluded him, I worried you were giving up too much for him.”
I went silent.
“I kept thinking about what Noah might need from you,” she continued. “I never stopped to notice everything he gives you.”
And suddenly, I saw our entire friendship differently.
The ice cream after my driving test.
The dinosaur drawing.
The lunches after Dad left.
The porch after my first heartbreak.
Noah had never been a responsibility I carried.
We carried each other.
“So what’s your condition?” I asked.
Mom smiled through tears.
“Don’t go to prom because six-year-old Chrissy made a promise.”
She squeezed my hands.
“Go because eighteen-year-old Christina chooses him.”
I laughed softly.
“Mom, that’s already why I’m going.”
“I know that now.”

When Mom and I returned downstairs, Noah stared at us.
“You took a long time.”
Mom walked directly toward him.
“Noah, can I have the first dance?”
His eyebrows shot up.
“Mrs. Jane, this isn’t prom.”
I burst out laughing.
Mom turned on music anyway.
For thirty awkward seconds, Noah tried to guide her while she repeatedly stepped in the wrong direction.
Finally, he sighed.
“Mrs. Jane, Chrissy dances better.”
“That’s why she’s your date.”
Then Mom’s expression softened.
“Thank you for staying.”
Noah looked confused, as though she had thanked him for breathing.
“She stays too,” he said.
Mom closed her eyes.
Those three words seemed to answer something she had been questioning for six years.
Later that night, Noah and I arrived at prom.
When the first slow song started, he held out his hand.
“Chrissy.”
“Yes?”
“You owe me.”
“Twelve years?”
“Twelve years.”
Within five seconds, he stepped directly on my shoe.
“You’re terrible at dancing.”
“Your dress is badly designed.”
We laughed until people stared.
And that was the beautiful thing about the night.
Nothing dramatic happened.
Nobody stopped the music.
Nobody applauded us.
Nobody treated our dance like some extraordinary achievement.
We were simply two eighteen-year-olds at prom, dancing badly together.
Exactly as we had promised when we were six.
Afterward, Mom picked us up.
My feet hurt, so Noah carried my heels.
He was hot, so I carried his jacket.
When we reached the car, he opened my door for me.
Then I leaned across the seat and opened his.
Mom watched us quietly in the rearview mirror.
For years, she had looked at our friendship and assumed one person must be taking care of the other.
That night, she finally understood.
Nobody was rescuing anybody.
Nobody was staying because of guilt.
Nobody was fulfilling an obligation.
Noah and I had simply figured out something at six years old that some adults spend their entire lives trying to understand.
