Buy-now-pay-later offers place the smallest number closest to the button. Four payments can feel lighter than one price even when the total is identical. The missing information is time: which dates will those payments meet, and what else is already due then?
Write every installment on a calendar before completing the purchase. Include rent, utilities, debt payments, transport, and other plans from every provider. Several harmless-looking schedules can overlap on the same week and turn a normal expense into an overdraft.
Check late fees, credit reporting, return procedures, and whether an automatic payment can pull from a low-balance account. Returning an item does not always pause the installment immediately. Keep receipts and monitor the account until the refund is complete.
The method can be manageable for a planned purchase backed by money already available. It is riskier when used to bridge ordinary groceries, repeated impulse buys, or uncertainty about the next paycheck.
Affordability is not the size of the first payment. It is the ability to meet every payment while preserving room for needs and surprises. The calendar tells that story more honestly than the checkout screen.
