PHILADELPHIA — Ashley Biden, the youngest daughter of former President Joe Biden, filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after more than 13 years of marriage, according to court records and reporting from the Philadelphia Inquirer. Biden filed the paperwork in Philadelphia on Aug. 11, 2025.
Biden, 44, and Krein, a physician and professor, married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware. The couple had been introduced by Biden’s late brother, Beau Biden, about two years before their wedding.
The circumstances surrounding the separation were not publicly disclosed. Philadelphia divorce records generally do not provide detailed public information about the reasons for a marriage ending.
The divorce filing attracted additional attention after Biden posted on social media around the time of the filing. Her post included a photograph of herself walking through a park and a message about “new beginnings” and establishing new boundaries.
Biden has generally maintained a relatively private public profile despite being the daughter of a former president. She has occasionally spoken publicly about her family, including during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, when she introduced her father and recalled memories from her parents’ family life.
Focus Turns to Biden’s Use of the Autopen
Separately, former President Biden has faced renewed political scrutiny over the use of an autopen to reproduce his signature on presidential documents, including clemency decisions issued near the end of his administration.
The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer, launched an investigation into the issue. In an October 2025 report, the committee alleged that Biden’s use of the autopen raised questions about whether he personally authorized certain executive actions. The committee referred its findings to the Justice Department and other authorities.
The central legal question is not simply whether an autopen was used, but whether the president personally authorized the documents bearing the reproduced signature. Biden has said that he personally made the clemency decisions and authorized the use of the autopen. ABC News reported in July 2025 that Biden specifically defended his use of the device, saying he made the pardon and clemency decisions himself.
Republican lawmakers have argued that further investigation is warranted, while the legal validity of particular executive actions would ultimately depend on the facts surrounding their authorization and the applicable law.
Earlier Questions About Biden’s Memory
The controversy has also revived discussion of Biden’s age and memory during his final years in office.
Special Counsel Robert Hur’s 2024 investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents concluded that criminal charges were not warranted. However, the report included observations about Biden’s memory during interviews, including difficulties recalling certain dates and periods of his life.
Those observations later became part of the broader political debate over Biden’s fitness for office, particularly after his widely criticized June 2024 presidential debate performance.
The divorce filing involving Ashley Biden and the separate political controversy surrounding her father are unrelated matters. While both have generated public attention, there is no evidence establishing a connection between the two.
For Ashley Biden, the divorce marks the end of a marriage that lasted more than a decade. For her father, the autopen controversy remains part of an ongoing political and legal debate over presidential decision-making, executive authority and the procedures used during the final months of his administration.
